Netflix is incredibly happy with the success ofThe Witchertelevision show. That should already be clear, given that Netflix greenlit a second season ofThe Witcherbefore the first season aired. Apparently greenlighting a second season wasn’t enough, however. Netflix wants more ofThe Witcherand it’s not willing to wait until the show gets around to a third or fourth season. Today Netflix announced that it would be making aWitcheranime film alongside the ongoing live-action TV show.
In an announcement made over Twitter, Netflix confirmed that an anime production namedThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfis now in the works. It’s unclear whetherThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfwill be based on the book series or if it will be original material. The only context provided for the animated film’s story is that it includes “a new threat facing the Continent.” There’s definitely plenty of source material inAndrzej Sapkowski’sWitcherbooks and dozens of short stories.

There’s also a question as to whetherThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfwill be a tie-in toThe Witchertelevision show. According to the announcement, the new animated film will be produced byThe Witcherwriter/producers Lauren S. Hissrich and Beau DeMayo. Their direct involvement could mean thatThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfwill tie in withThe WitcherTV show’s story.
The only other information provided aboutThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfis the studio that will be handling the animation. Studio Mir is based in Korea and has an impressive list of shows that it’s worked on. The studio’s first project wasAvatar: The Legend of Korra, as the studio’s executive director had previously worked on Avatar: The Last Airbender. The studio’s most recent project has beenVoltron: Legendary Defender, which was also developed for Netflix.
Netflix doesn’t have any further information, like runtime or release date, to share as of yet regardingThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. What’s important is that the film exists and is in production. Also important is that Netflix is showing very clearly how invested it is inThe Witchergoing forward. Just one season has aired and already Netflix is funding an anime film based on the show. It hints that this may be just the start of Netflix’s plans forThe Witcherfranchise.
