Summary
In a new twist of events regarding theJohn Wickfranchise, a spinoff film will follow a fan-favorite character fromJohn Wick: Chapter 4. The spinoff will focus on the blind, expert assassinCaine. Despite no announcements of a fifth chapter in the series, this newly announced spinoff is said to follow the events of the most recent film.
There have been plenty of whispers ofJohn Wick: Chapter 5, but with nothing official and set in stone, it seems the current era will be focused on spinoffs set within the largerJohn Wickuniverse. After the fourth film premiered last year, the most recent entry in the franchise isThe Continental: From the World of John Wick, a spinoff Peacock exclusive prequel series focused on thetitular secretive hotel for assassins, which aired in late 2023. The next John Wick film will also be a spinoff,Ballerina, following an assassin played by Ana de Armas (Knives Out, Blade Runner: 2049) who has been trained by the Ruska Roma, the elite Russian organization that trains orphans to be assassins.
According to Deadline, thenext film will be another spinoff starring martial arts legend Donnie Yen (ofIp ManandRogue One: A Star Wars Storyfame) as Caine, a popular side character who debuted inJohn Wick: Chapter 4. The untitled film will be produced by Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk, who have produced every mainline John Wick film, as well as by Chad Stahelski, who has served as the director for the entire franchise so far, but is stepping into a producing role forBallerinaand this.Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it has been revealed that the film will follow the events ofJohn Wick: Chapter 4.
The mysterious hitman Caine left a big impact on the franchise despite his limited time inJohn Wick: Chapter 4. Forced to hunt down John Wick under threat to his daughter, Caine winds up traveling to Japan and killing Wick’s friend Koji, who was hiding Wick at the Osaka Continental. A post-credits scene shows Koji’s knife-wielding daughter Kira confronting Caine, having sworn to avenge her father’s death. Undoubtedly, this confrontation and its consequences will be a large factor of the untitled Caine spinoff’s story.
John Wick will appear inBallerina, despite the character seemingly dying at the end of the fourth film. This is because Ballerina is a prequel to the events ofJohn Wick: Chapter 4. If there’s any hope ofKeanu Reeves returning in a fifth chapter, this new Caine spinoff could serve as a stepping stone for that purpose. But ifJohn Wickis completely dead and Lionsgate wishes to move on without him, perhaps Caine will establish new iconography for the franchise and prove just as popular with his own movie. It’s set to shoot in Hong Kong next year, and will most likely premiere sometime in 2026-2027.
