Game cancellations are a common occurrence in the industry. As time has gone on, plenty of titles have been canned as companies turn towards what will work rather than take unnecessary risks.Ubisofthas hadits history of canning projects, and today has revealed to fans of the gaming titan that four of the studio’s upcoming projects have been shelved.Today marks the company’s financial earnings call and with it has come a ton of news for fans of the massive gaming titan to digest. TheSplinter CellVR title received an official announcement by Ubisoft back in 2020 alongside anAssassin’s CreedVR title that were set to launch on Oculus headsets.Ghost Recon Frontlinesaw a massive waveof fan backlash after its announcement back in 2021 as it was revealed to be a free-to-play battle royale title marking a complete shift from the standard tactical FPS gameplay the series was known for. The two unannounced titles that were canned are a complete mystery.
The cancellations come fromUbisoftnoticing the change in the financial market as the earnings call reflects that sentiment.Rainbow Six Siegeperformed well for the company with the launch of its seventh year of content, andAssassin’s Creedsaw a massive surge due to the next generation updates forAssassin’s Creed OriginsandAssassin’s Creed Odysseyas well as the contentAssassin’s Creed Valhallareceived.
Fan reception was mixed in regard to the announcements. Most fans were very adamant in their disdain ofGhost Recon Frontlinein light of how the Tom Clancy games have changed over time under Ubisoft’s watch. However, the potential of a VR port forSplinter Cellwas intriguing as it most likely would’ve done well based off of the feeling of donning Sam Fisher’s iconic night vision goggles in a VR space.
With no information, it’s likely that fans will find out what the two other canceled titles were if someone decides to leak the details. With Ubisoft focusing on the future with its upcomingUbisoft Forward scheduled for September, it most certainly won’t be the gaming titan who shares the information as to what they were any time soon.
