Thanks to anincredibly cryptic tweet by Bluepoint Games, the company behind a number of HD remakes and remasters likeShadow of the Colossus, the conversation has started about remakes of a few games that the developer could possibly be working on. One of the highest priority names to be thrown around isMetal Gear Solid, with the first entry in the series looking like the favored option for the new remake.
With Konami moving away from video games in the last few years and the mastermind behindMetal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima, having left the company that still owns the rights to the hit series, there is little hope for a newMetal Geargame coming in the future. However, if a remake gets enough attention and proves to earn Konami and Bluepoint enough to warrant more titles and remakes, there may be more of the series coming to the PS5 in the future.

TheMetal Gearseries has left a lasting impression on gaming in the past, setting the pace for thestealth genresince 1987. Fast forwarding through toMetal Gear Solid, the first in the series that released for its indefinite home on PlayStation, the game took cutscenes to a whole new level, with later games in the series eventually holding the record for longest cutscene in a video game. This lends toMetal Gear Solid’s heavy emphasis on story and cinematic presentation that has become a through line for the entire series, as well as the rest of Hideo Kojima’s body of work.
This leaning towards cinematics and powerful stories makesMetal Gear Solida prime candidate for a remake, bringing the graphics and gameplay up to the level of modern games and even some of the more recent games in the series likePhantom Pain. Having a remake as a launch title feels like a strange concept for the beginning of the next generation of consoles, but in the case ofMetal Gear Solid, a brand new attempt at the game might be one of the best ways to show the growth of the system since the original released. Showing an HD re-imagining of the classic Solid Snake vs Liquid Snake side by side with the original graphics could show the vast improvements that have been made for the graphical capabilities since the first PlayStation. The current fad of remakes, fromCrash BandicoottoMedievil, has already shown how PS4 has improved the quality of graphics, so utilizing the power of a PS5 to do the same can set the course for the next generation in a similar way.
Similar to those previously mentioned remakes, as well asBluepoint’s other projects, the impact that theMetal Gearseries has had on the industry is nearly impossible to fully measure. The concept of a game that avoids combat and instead tasks to player to infiltrate without being caught in the first place was new when the firstMetal Geargames released.
