World of Warcraftrecently made an official announcement confirming Hardcore realms forClassic Era WoW. These high-stakes permadeath servers will provide the ultimate challenge forWorld of Warcraft Classicplayers.

In May,World of Warcraft Classicdeveloper Aggrend appearedon the Hardcore AllstarsClassic WoWlive event stream to formally announce upcoming support for official one-life realms. Details were sparse, but Aggrend at least gave a taste of what is to come.

Now,World of Warcrafthas given its official announcement for Hardcore Classic. When making characters on these realms, players will only have one life–once they die, they cannot resurrect by any means. However, they will still be able to log on to their characters to explore the world as a ghost, communicate with their friends, and interact with guilds. Additionally, players can useWorld of Warcraft’spaid character transfer serviceto move dead characters from Hardcore realms to normalClassic Era WoWservers.

To ensure the Hardcore experience is fair for everyone,World of Warcraftis implementing a few safeguards. Hardcore realms are PvE, and they are tweaking the way players are flagged forPvP in theseClassic WoWrealmsto ensure players who participate do so willingly. In addition, many quest-related NPCs will no longer be able to be attacked by players of the opposing faction, and the distance creatures chase before returning to their spawn is being adjusted to ensure no black dragons are kited into Elwynn Forest.

Hardcore realms are hitting theWorld of Warcraft ClassicPublic Test Realm on June 29. Players can expect Blizzard to test these realms for a month or two, with the full launch planned for later this summer. Like other PTRs, HardcoreClassiccharacters on these test servers will not be able to transfer to the live servers once the update arrives. Blizzard also confirmed that it wants players to be able to still use community-made Hardcoreadd-ons to enhance their officialWoW Classicexperiences.World of Warcraftis developing the HardcoreClassicEra servers with these mods in mind, so players will be able to impose further limitations to their characters at their own leisure.

Fans of Hardcore Blizzard games have been getting their fill inDiablo 4. TheLilith statue that will be engraved with the first 1000Diablo 4players to reach level 100 with a Hardcore character has officially arrived at the Blizzard campus, and slots are filling up fast. Hopefully,World of Warcraftplayers will have as many highs and lows with official HardcoreClassicEra realms as they have had inDiablo 4.
